Hey together,

I got good news 🙂
As you probably know we are 75 participants of the 31st CBYX program who are staying in the USA. This is already an incredible possibility, experience & chance. But now I will tell you something more what will happen to me during my stay in the U.S.. Cultural Vistas, our organization here in the U.S. offers every year for five of the 75 participants an six-weeks internship at the Congress of the United States !! That means we will finish our college semester normally to the mid of December and will start the internship in Washington D.C. at January, 5th. Which goes then to February, 13th.
As you likely can imagine I do not tell you this story without reason! 🙂 I am one of the lucky five who got the honor to been selected. 🙂 Matt goes to Washington D.C. I went through two application steps and got the information on monday finally. 🙂 The first step was to send in a letter of motivation and resume. I guess approximately 40 of us 75 applied for it. As I passed this step the organization told me I am one of 16 candidates who will have a call interview. Last week then I had my call interview with the program director and her assistant. On monday finally I got the information I have been selected. 🙂 I still can not believe it and it is just such an awesome thought to work at the Congress of U.S. in Washington D.C. I am looking forward to it and also to celebrate my birthday in the Capitol of U.S.. The organization will tell me all further important information in the next weeks. They will arrange the transportation to Washington D.C and also the hostfamily with who I will live with. I am very happy and also a little bit proud of myself. 🙂 If I have finished then my internship at the Congress in the mid of February I have to start my work internship immediately. But I do not know where yet. You will get further informations about this topic soon. 🙂

Hey everybody,

As you probably realized I am in U.S since two and half months! Isn´t that crazy, is it? The time just runs so fast. And it´s like we have seen us just yesterday 🙂 But it happened already so many nice things, I went too such nice places, met such lovely people, made such great experiences and got such memorable impressions. I also know that you all want to know what´s going on with Matt in Oney, IL? But it is very hard to find the right words to describe what the life in Olney is like. Despite I want to try to give you an impression as good as possible.

Just today, during my volunteer work at “The Master´s Hands” (food bank) I met one woman and we started to talk. She told me that she had lived already in 38 different states of U.S. and finally lives in Olney since two years. Of course I asked her what was the most beautiful, in other words “best” place to live? She replyed: “honestly?” Me: “Of course!” Her: “Olney!” Yes I know it´s very hard to believe but I can understand her. 🙂

Anyway, I have a good time and got lucky with my placement even if it´s not called Chicago, NYC or San Francisco. I have been already to every of these cities and of course I liked them too but you can´t compare these cities with Olney. Here you can really experience what is the American way of life like!

Three weeks ago I watched my first “real” football game, O.K. it was “just” college football but it was even more crazy. Thousands of people, they even brought their tents, flags, BBQ grills with them. I have never seen this before in my life, just awesome. It is exactly what I like, these kind of sport events.

Two weeks ago I flew to NYC, NY I know, again. 🙂 I also know I never did this before in Germany just to fly, for instance, to Hamburg over a long weekend. But I was looking for some appartments or places where I could live during my internship, because my searching in the internet was unsuccessful although I tried so many different ways to find some. Anyway, but it was very nice to be back in NYC again. I stayed with a friends hostmom in New Jersey.

Last weekend I drove to Indianapolis, IN and I watched my first NBA game. It was Indiana Pacers vs. Dallas Mavericks. Friday night it happened and my dream came true. It was around midnight and exactly between my parents birthdays. 🙂 I met my idol, I met DIRK NOWITZKI. But the funny part about this story is how it happened. I met one other participant of my program there and we went out for dinner. During our supper we watched the NBA game between Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks and that´s why I thought the Mavs will just come on Saturday to play the game. But I was wrong. After a couple hours we left the restaurant to go back to my car but at first we went the wrong way and we had to turn. Finally we found our way and we passed one hotel on our way where some people in Mavs shirts were waiting. I asked them for who are they waiting and they just told me: “for DIRK!” In this moment I couldn´t believe it, because I thought they will stay in Cleveland over the night. You already don´t believe me?, haha wait It´s going to be more unbelievable. I told them that we are Germans and they were freaking out because we got a bigger chance that he will stop by and takes his time for us. So, we hadn´t to wait more than one minute and the buses arrived. DIRK was one of the first players who left the bus. I yelled at him that I am from Munich and was talking about Würzburg. Maybe some of you can remember that I spent one week in Würzburg during my preparation seminar, so I got some insider informations. 🙂 But back to my story. At first he didn´t pay attention to both of us and signed some basketballs and shirts from the Americans. But I was sure he can hear us and that´s why I was wondering why he doesn´t look up. At this moment I already thought I will miss him because he was already in front of the hotels door. But……wait for it……it´s going to be legendary! He stopped to sign, looked up and came directly to us. I can´t remember what I was thinking in this moment so I just started to talk to him. 🙂 He asked what I was doing here and so I got time to explain it to him. I think I never talked so fast. 🙂 As I mentioned that I took him as my idol and example in my application for the CBYX program he was kind of impressed and even said: “really?” Then we started to talk about the game vs. Pacers and he told me that he will not play tomorrow, but maybe we got a second chance to meet him. Finally we took our pic and I was the happiest man of the world. 🙂

Hey Leute,

heute möchte ich Euch von meinen ersten “roadtrips” berichten. Ich weiß dass ein bisschen Zeit vergangen ist seit meinem letzten Beitrag, ich hoffe dass Ihr mir verzeiht. 😉 Aber das ist ja eher ein gutes Zeichen. 🙂 Hier gibt es viel zu erleben und zu sehen. Für alle unternommenen Trips hatte ich bis jetzt auch immer sehr viel Glück mit dem Wetter; warm & ein Himmel im bayerischen blau & weiß.

Beginnen möchte ich mit dem Trip nach Champaign, IL. Gefahren bin ich mit drei anderen “international students” (MinSook aus Südkorea, Lisette und Jesenja aus Peru). Ein Sohn von der “hostfamily”, bei der ich auf meiner “homestaytour” vier Tage verbracht hatte und ein ehemaliger “exchange student” vom OCC (Olney community college) studieren dort auf der “university of Illinois”. Die Stadt könnt Ihr Euch in etwa wie Regensburg oder Passau von der Größe und der Zielgruppe der Einwohner (Studenten) vorstellen. Ihr könnt Euch deshalb auch bestimmt denken, dass dort das Nachtleben dementsprechend groß geschrieben wird. 🙂 War unter anderem auch ein Grund des Besuchs. 🙂 Nach NYC war ich dort in meinem zweiten Club in den U.S. Was mir sehr gut gefallen hat, weil es ein typischer Hip-Hop Club war.

Das Wochenende darauf war es dann endlich soweit. Es ging für mich als gebürtigen Münchner zum zweitgrößten Oktoberfest der Welt. Nach Cincinnati in Ohio. Es ging wieder mit meinem Auto und den drei Mädels auf die “interstate” in Richtung Osten. Hinzu sind wir über Louisville, KY gefahren. Nach der Ankunft am Freitag Abend ging es gleich in eine Bar, in der eine bayerische Blaskapelle aus Kempten gespielt hat. Sogleich habe ich mich wie zuhause gefühlt. Natürlich habe ich das gesamte Wochenende über durchgehend meine mitgebrachte Lederhos´n getragen. (Kathi wollte am Samstag auch regelmäßige “updates” und Beweisfotos) 🙂 An dem erwähnten Samstag hat auch dort das Oktoberfest mit offiziellen Reden eröffnet. Eine Rede durfte Anne Hübner aus München halten. Sie war die offizielle Vertretung von der Partnerstadt Cincinnati´s aus München. Sie ist übrigens eine Kollegin von meiner MdB, Claudia Tausend.
Das Wochenende über konnten wir netterweise alle bei einem “hostdad” eines anderen PPP´ler übernachten. Insgesamt haben sich an diesem Wochenende in der Stadt 11 PPP´ler getroffen und gemeinsam gefeiert. Während dem Trip bin ich auch in den Genuss von guten deutschem Bier (Erdinger Weißbier) und deutschem Essen (Schnitz´l Semmel und Sauerkraut) gekommen. 🙂 Ein bisschen habe ich unser Original aus München ja schon vermisst, aber war natürlich auch eine super schöne Erfahrung zu sehen wie es die Amis feiern. Zurück ging es dann über Indianapolis, IN.

Folgendes Wochenende sind wir dann von unserem “college” aus mit noch zwei anderen “colleges” aus der Umgebung nach Chicago, IL aufgebrochen. Freitag in der Früh ging es mit dem Van gen Norden. Diese drei Tage werde ich so schnell nicht wieder vergessen. Wir haben viel unternommen und besonders schöne Momente erlebt. Die zwei Nächte haben wir direkt in “downtown” von Chicago in einem schicken Hotel verbracht. 🙂 Nach der Ankunft ging es gleich mal in den “millenium park” zur “been” und “water fountain”. Nach einem “walk” an der Strandpromenade ging es auf den “Willis tower”. Nach einer nicht allzu langen Nacht sind wir Samstag morgens shoppen gegangen, bevor es zum “Navy Pier” und der “speedboat sightseeing tour” ging. Ein Mittagessen im “hardrock cafe” stand auch auf dem Plan. Am Abend haben wir uns dann Fahrräder ausgeliehen und uns von dem Abendverkehr durch das Nachtleben treiben lassen. So trifft man ja bekannterweise auf die besten und schönsten Ecken. 🙂 Unter anderem bin ich zu zwei Punkten von meinem Pflichtprogramm gekommen: Michael Jordan´s “steak restaurant” und “Disney shop”. Nach einer zweiten kurzen Nacht ging es am Sonntag noch zum “homestadium” von den Chicago Bulls. Ein volles Programm, aber so soll es ja auch sein wenn man etwas erleben möchte. 🙂 Das “highlight” vom Chicago “trip” kommt aber jetzt erst noch. Samstagabend auf unserem Heimweg zu unserem Hotel (wir waren sieben Leute) hat uns ein Limousinen-Fahrer, auf der Straße wartend, aus seiner heraus gerufen:  “Do you want a drive for 10 bucks?” Wir: “10 bucks for everybody?, sure!”
Ja genau so war es. So sind wir dann zu unserer privaten Taxifahrt mit einer schwarzen “stretchlimousine” gekommen. 🙂 Glück muss man haben im Leben. Das ist meiner Meinung nach auch ein perfektes Schluss “statement” für diesen Blogbeitrag. Viele Grüße aus Olney, IL.
